Chula Vista Derby in U.S. Open Cup Qualifier

First time in history there are two teams from Chula Vista in U.S. Open Cup

The Rebels Soccer Club was formed in 1982 and on the youth side has been able to capture State and National Championships along with playing in San Diego’s Presidio and SDDA League, Coast Soccer League, California Regional League, Super Y League, and Elite Clubs National League.

Launched by the Jesus Acevedo in 2018, the Rebels SC kicked off its adult side with a men’s soccer team.

Originally, the Rebels Men’s Soccer Team played in the San Diego County Soccer League and entered into the Cal South Adult State Cup. This year, coached by Matt Emmert, the Rebels SC formed a U23 team and joined the Los Angeles based SoCal Premier summer league, finishing as a finalist for the U23 division.

For this season, the Rebels Men’s Soccer Team has now joined the United Premier Soccer League (UPSL), which has 400 teams nationally. The Rebels will compete in the newly formed San Diego division which kicks off the 2019 fall season and will host their very first home game this weekend.

The Rebels Men’s Soccer Team has joined the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, commonly known as the US Open Cup, which is a knock-out competition and is the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the United States.

The draw has taken place for the first round of the US Open Cup qualifiers and the Rebels team will face Chula Vista FC (CVFC) team who has a history in the US Open Cup next Saturday, September 21.

If the last two games between Rebels SC and CVFC are any indication, this US Open Cup qualifier will surely be an exciting one.

THIS IS A HISTORIC CHULA VISTA DERBY

These two teams have faced each other three times this year already, with the most recent games were played in the SoCal Premier summer league when the teams tied once and CVFC earning the victory in the second game with a tight score of 1-0.

“WE ARE VERY EXCITED TO MAKE OUR FIRST APPEARANCE IN U.S. OPEN CUP QUALIFYING AND OUR GOAL IS TO MAKE IT INTO THE FIRST ROUND OF THE TOURNAMENT PROPER.”

Matt Emmert, Head Coach Rebels SC Men’s Soccer Team

“I’m grateful to Rebels as a club for making it possible to enter the Open Cup qualifying as well as to compete in the UPSL,” said Emmert. “I believe we can challenge near the top of the division while giving young players from the South Bay an opportunity to develop against high-level competition. As a group, we have taken big steps in the past several months and will continue to grow.”

“THE UPSL IS ALWAYS EXCITED WHEN A QUALITY CLUB LIKE REBELS SC JOINS.”

Yan Skwara – Commissioner, UPSL

“I think it’s clear that the Rebels SC are in line with our vision as a league and certainly will take advantage of the fact that they have a tremendous youth base that now they can graduate up into a men’s tier level of play, wearing the Rebels badge and helping these players prepare for college or playing in the professional game,” said Yan Swara, Commissioner of the UPSL.

“Adding the Rebels to an already competitive San Diego division,  now with a total of eight teams, is going to translate to highly competitive season and that’s what, as a league, is our goal,” said Skwara.

With the high demand for players interested in playing for the new Rebels adult team, they will be forming a second team, Rebels United, which will play in the San Diego County Soccer League beginning in October.

General Manager and Second team, Rebels United coach Jesus “Jesse” Acevedo is looking forward to the match. “This has been a dream of mine for many years now and the local derby between Rebels and Chula Vista FC is not only great for the community and the city of Chula Vista but for the future of soccer in the South Bay,” said Acevedo.
